Stockholm, Sweden's capital and the largest city in the Nordic countries, is situated across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea.

Established in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl, the city has a rich history dating back to the Stone Age. Approximately 1 million people reside in the municipality, with 2.1 million in the urban area and 2.4 million in the metropolitan area. Serving as the county seat of Stockholm County, the city boasts a strategic location along the coast, with the Stockholm archipelago to the east. This vibrant urban center has been a significant settlement since the 6th millennium BC.

Stockholm, Sweden's cultural, media, political, and economic nucleus, contributes over a third to the nation's GDP, ranking among Europe's top 10 regions for GDP per capita. Recognized as a global city, it stands as the largest in Scandinavia and a primary center for corporate headquarters in the Nordic region. Home to prestigious universities like the Karolinska Institute and Stockholm School of Economics, it annually hosts the Nobel Prize ceremonies.

The Vasa Museum, a cherished attraction, is Scandinavia's most visited. The Stockholm metro, inaugurated in 1950, is renowned for its station decor, earning the title of the world's longest art gallery. With a rich sports history, the city hosted the 1912 Summer Olympics and various international sports events.
