Lassie Wi' The Yellow Coatie is a Scottish song written by James Duff, known as the "Methven Poet", and published in his A Collection of Poems, Songs, &c., Chiefly Scottish in Perth in 1816.James Duff was a gardener by trade and worked at Methven in Perthshire, Scotland. Although little biographical information about him survives, Lassie Wi' The Yellow Coatie became his best-known song and subsequently entered the Scottish folk-song tradition, listed as number 2582 in the Roud Folk Song Index.
The song is a courtship song in which a country lad asks the "lassie wi' the yellow coatie" to marry him. He tells her that although his farm is small and he has little money, he has food and a comfortable home and will give her his heart.
The title is considerably older than Duff's song. A dance called The Lassie in the Yellow Coatie was published by John Johnson in 1742, and a tune bearing the same name was known during the 18th century. It is not known whether Duff was inspired by the older title or by an earlier song which has since been lost.
