Leaves in autumn turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow as trees prepare for winter.

The shift occurs when chlorophyll, the green pigment used for photosynthesis, breaks down due to decreasing daylight and cooler temperatures. With less chlorophyll, other pigments become visible, giving autumn leaves their vibrant colours. Eventually, trees shed their leaves, helping them conserve moisture and energy.

The fallen leaves decay over time, enriching the soil with essential nutrients and playing a crucial role in supporting the ecosystem by providing food and shelter for various organisms.
