Scottish Country Dance Instruction
The Cardinal (R8x32) 3C (4C set) Lewis N Derrick 19891-4 The 1st and 2nd couples dance a petronella turn to the right into a line in the centre facing partners and set
5-8 The 1st and 2nd couples dance half a reel of four to change places
9-12 The 2nd and 1st couples turn partners once round by the right hand
13-14 The 2nd and 1st couples dance a petronella turn to the right into own sidelines
15-16 The 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples set on sidelines hands joined
17-20 The 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance six hands round to the left remaining in a circle with hands joined at the end
21-24 The 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples set, then dropping hands and pulling back right shoulders all cast one place clockwise round the circle rejoining hands again at end
25-28 The 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples set, then dropping hands and pulling back left shoulders all cast one place anticlockwise round the circle rejoining hands again at end
29-32 The 2nd, 1st and 3rd couples dance six hands round to the right ending on own sidelines in the order 213

This was devised by Lewis Derrick to commemorate Cardinal David Beaton (1494-1546), Archbishop of St Andrews and the last Scottish cardinal prior to the Reformation.Suggested tune: The Lass o' Gowrie.
