Muse Cottage is the home of Muriel Johnstone, a celebrated Scottish pianist and composer known for her contributions to Scottish dance music.Muriel Johnstone, born in June 1947 in West Hartlepool, England to Scottish parents, is a Scottish pianist and composer. She grew up and received her education in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Muriel began learning piano at age seven and violin at eight. She attended Ardrossan Academy in Ayrshire, where she was Dux of Music in 1965 and started composing. Deeply involved in Scottish traditional music, she played for dancing and was invited to play at the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) Summer School in 1975, becoming the youngest accompanist at the time.
Johnstone served as Director of Music for the RSCDS and arranged music for over 20 of their publications.
