West Renfrewshire occupies the western side of the modern Renfrewshire council area, extending from the outer suburbs of Glasgow toward the Firth of Clyde.
It includes towns and villages such as Johnstone, Kilbarchan, Howwood, Lochwinnoch, Houston, Crosslee and Linwood, and its territory stretches toward Inverclyde and North Ayrshire.
The area covers roughly 101 square miles (262 square kilometres), making it one of the smallest council areas in Scotland by area but moderately sized by population . Many people live in urban centres close to Glasgow, while large rural tracts remain, used for agriculture, including dairy and vegetable cultivation.
West Renfrewshire is governed as part of Renfrewshire Council. Since 1996 it has been divided into several multi-councillor wards under the single transferable vote system, including wards such as Johnstone South and Elderslie (around 15,860 residents), Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch, and Houston, Crosslee and Linwood (around 19,152 residents in 2020).
Historically the region formed the western portion of the old Renfrewshire county. It remained under Strathclyde Region until the 1996 reorganisation, when Renfrewshire became a unitary authority covering this western segment.
Economically the area once saw heavy industry, but today combines residential towns, farmed countryside and light manufacturing. Several commuting routes serve the region, including rail connections to Glasgow and road links via the M8 motorway. Glasgow Airport is nearby, situated just north of Paisley in the eastern part of the council area .
The River Gryffe, River Calder and the Cart rivers pass through the western part of Renfrewshire, with waterways and nearby parks used for leisure. Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park extends into the western boundary, offering green space and countryside access.
